Water on the kitchen floor is never a good sign, especially when it’s coming from a built-in refrigerator surrounded by custom cabinetry and wood floors. A Sub-Zero leaking water can damage flooring and cabinets quickly, so it’s worth finding the cause right away.
The good news is that most Sub-Zero leaks come from a handful of common, repairable causes.
Where Is the Water Coming From?
Before calling, take a moment to note where the water appears. Water inside the refrigerator, water under the crisper drawers, water at the front of the unit, and water behind or underneath it all point to different causes. That information helps a technician diagnose the problem faster.
Common Causes of a Sub-Zero Leaking Water
Clogged Defrost Drain
During the defrost cycle, water melts off the evaporator and runs through a drain to a pan below, where it evaporates. If the drain clogs with debris or ice, water can overflow inside the refrigerator or onto the floor.
Water Supply Line Problems
The water line that feeds the ice maker and dispenser can crack, loosen or develop a pinhole leak, especially if the refrigerator was recently moved or serviced. Leaks behind the unit often start here.
Faulty Water Inlet Valve
The inlet valve controls water flow to the ice maker. If it sticks open or cracks, it can overfill the ice mold or leak behind the refrigerator.
Ice Maker Overflow or Frozen Fill Tube
Low water pressure or a valve that doesn’t close completely can cause water to freeze in the fill tube, then overflow when it thaws. See our post on Sub-Zero ice makers that stop working for related problems.
Drain Pan Issues
A cracked or misaligned drain pan can let defrost water spill onto the floor instead of evaporating.
Door Seal Problems
Worn door gaskets let warm, humid Florida air inside, which creates condensation and frost. When that frost melts, the extra water can pool inside or leak out.
What to Do Right Away
- Wipe up water and protect the floor with towels
- Check whether the water is clean (supply line) or slightly dirty (defrost drain)
- Turn off the water supply valve to the refrigerator if the leak seems to come from the water line
- Keep the doors closed to protect food temperature
- Note any error messages or changes in cooling
If the refrigerator is also running warm, our guide to Sub-Zero cooling problems explains what else to watch for. The FDA recommends keeping refrigerators at 40°F or below.
